Boyne Mountain Supports Former Local Teacher in Quest to Publish First Book

Robert Emmet spent decades teaching English to high school students in nearby Boyne City.  Through those years, he had the privilege of educating thousands of young people including Boyne Resorts' CEO, Stephen Kircher, and Boyne Mountain Resort's President and General Manager, Ed Grice.

Following a major transplant surgery in 2016, Emmet took his love of the English language and penned his first ever book, Close to My Heart: The Terrifying, Sometimes Humorous Journey to a Double-Lung Transplant.

When the time came to publish, Emmet had one partner in mind to help make his book a reality - Boyne Mountain.

"Working with Robert on this book was an opportunity for us to give back," said Grice.  "The growth of Boyne Mountain would not have been possible without the time, energy, and heart from many members of the community.  We always feel good about giving back, and with Robert's book, a portion of proceeds is also going to help others."

Emmet, now 70, was a healthy and active 66-year-old when he started struggling to ride his bike up hills that previously didn't challenge him. After a terrifying near drowning, he knew something was wrong.  At his first office visit, his doctor scheduled a meeting with a transplant team.  Emmet was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and the disease was quickly taking over his lungs.  With the seriousness of his situation, he was immediately placed on a transplant list and waited only eight days before donor lungs were found for him.

"I didn't want to write another surgery book," said Emmet, who uses a pen name to protect the donors and other patients in his story. "Close to My Heart is a story of powerful intent - the strength to fight for survival - but it's also an intimate perspective of what happens when all the stars align just right. There's humor, pathos, unexpected twists and even zany hospital procedures that combined to save my life."

Close to My Heart retails for $16.96 and can be purchased at Boyne Mountain's Geschenk Laden Gift Shop or Boyne Country Sports store.  The book is also available on Amazon and Ingram Spark.  A percentage of each sale benefits the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation and the Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Family and Friends Patient Fund.
