Spring in Boyne Country
From wild morel hunts to hilltop bike trails, May in Boyne Country is bursting with reasons to venture north. Here's your guide to the season's best festivals and events — all within easy reach of Boyne Mountain Resort.
Boyne City Morel Mushroom Festival

Every May, Boyne City becomes the unofficial capital of one of Michigan's most beloved seasonal traditions — the morel mushroom hunt. The Boyne City Morel Festival (May 15–18) draws foragers, foodies, and festival-goers from across the Midwest for a weekend packed with competitive mushroom hunts, live entertainment, local vendors, and, of course, plenty of wild morel tastings.
Whether you're a seasoned forager or simply curious about what all the fuss is over a fungi, this is one of northern Michigan's most charming spring traditions — and Boyne Mountain Resort puts you just minutes from the action.

Called the largest concentration of morel mushroom cooking in the world, the Taste of Morels is the crown jewel of the entire weekend. Local chefs (including our own culinary teams!) transform freshly foraged morels into extraordinary dishes, competing for top honors as voted on by a panel.
Tasting tickets are available for purchase, giving guests the chance to sample the competing dishes and vote with their appetites. It's part competition, part culinary theater, and entirely unforgettable.
Pedal Through Paradise

May is a spectacular month to get on a bike in northern Michigan. The Zoo-de-Mack is a beloved community cycling event that takes riders through stunning lake country scenery — a perfect blend of challenge and camaraderie for cyclists of all levels.
May 15-17, 2026
And if mountain biking is more your speed, mark May 23rd on your calendar: The Highlands Bike Park in Harbor Springs opens for the season. With flowy trails set against sweeping views of Little Traverse Bay, it's one of the most scenic rides in the Midwest.

Top of Michigan Festival of Races
May 22-23, 2026

Runners will want to pencil in the Top of Michigan Festival of Races in Petoskey. This multi-distance event winds through some of the most beautiful terrain in the Great Lakes State. With distances for all experience levels, this is a great excuse to combine a destination race weekend with a longer stay in the Petoskey area.
Market Season Returns
Two of northern Michigan's most beloved farmers markets fire back up in May. The Boyne City Farmers Market kicks off May 16th, bringing local produce, artisan goods, and community energy back to downtown.
On May 23rd, the Downtown Harbor Springs Farmers Market follows suit — set against one of the most picturesque small-town Main Streets in Michigan.

May is northern Michigan's best-kept secret.
The crowds haven't arrived yet, the landscape is waking up, and the region is buzzing with festivals, markets, and outdoor adventures. From morel hunts to mountain biking, there's never been a better reason to head north before the summer rush.
