Northern Michigan Runs on Good Beer

Michigan consistently ranks among the top states in the country for craft breweries, and this corner of it punches well above its weight.

From downtown taprooms with bay views to hilltop breweries overlooking Lake Michigan, the breweries around Boyne Mountain are the kind of places you show up for a pint and end up staying for the evening.

Local Breweries

  • Stiggs Brewery

    Boyne City

Stiggs has been the heartbeat of Boyne City's craft beer scene since 2017, operating out of a beautifully restored historic building with 30 taps, a full kitchen specializing in smoked meats, and a BBQ program that's as much a reason to visit as the beer.

  • Beards Brewery

    Petoskey

Founded in 2012 by two Petoskey locals who wanted to build a gathering place as much as a brewery, Beards has grown into one of Northern Michigan's most beloved craft beer destinations. The taproom sits right on the corner of downtown Petoskey with a patio that overlooks Little Traverse Bay.

  • Elder Piper Beer & Cider

    Petoskey

The newest entry on this list and already one of the most interesting. Founded by Trace and Eeva Redmond — veterans of Founders, Sierra Nevada, and Highland Brewing — Elder Piper brings a decade of serious craft beer experience back home to Northern Michigan.

  • Petoskey Brewing

    M-119 | Petoskey

Brewing has been happening on this site since 1898 — the original Petoskey Brewing Company operated here until Prohibition, and the building was revived as a brewery again in 2012. Brewery tours are available for anyone who wants to see how it all comes together.

  • Short's Brewing Company

    Bellaire

Short's is a northern Michigan institution. Joe Short opened the doors of this downtown Bellaire brewpub in 2004 and built it into one of the most recognized craft breweries in the state. Worth the drive to Bellaire, and Bellaire is worth the drive on its own.

  • Bier's Inwood Brewery

    Charlevoix

Six miles south of Charlevoix on a hill overlooking Lake Michigan and a sweep of wild apple orchards, Bier's Inwood is one of the most scenic breweries in the region. Live music and bonfires run from May through October, with lawn games and a full kitchen next door.
