What Is Team Boyne?
Team Boyne welcomes athletes of all experience levels—from young skiers discovering the joy of the sport to those ready to grow their skills in a supportive team environment. Athletes train within our Junior, Competition, and Freestyle programs, progressing alongside peers while building confidence and strong fundamentals on the snow.
Our experienced coaches foster a positive, engaging atmosphere that encourages progress, teamwork, and a lifelong love of skiing.
For athletes ready to advance, Team Boyne also offers race development opportunities and a Freestyle Program for skiers and riders who enjoy creativity, terrain features, and pushing their skills in new ways.
Whatever your child’s goals, our programs are designed to help them grow, challenge themselves, and have fun on the mountain.

History of Program
Before the launch of Team Boyne, Boyne Racing developed generations of youth skiers, building strong fundamentals and a love of competitive skiing. The program helped shape countless athletes in slalom and giant slalom racing, fostering both skill and confidence on the snow.
A key figure in this legacy is Cary Adgate, two-time U.S. Olympian, six-time national champion, and Hall of Famer, whose contributions as a racer and mentor helped put Northern Michigan skiing on the map. His influence continues to inspire Team Boyne athletes today.
Our Coaches
Head Coach & Ambassador: Boyne Forever FoundationCary Adgate
Cary Adgate is a two-time Olympian, six-time U.S. National Champion, and the most decorated alpine ski racer in Michigan history. His journey with the sport came full circle on the slopes of Boyne Mountain, where he was first coached as a teenager by a retired world-class racer and has now spent 16 years coaching the next generation. Cary is passionate about teaching the technical side of skiing, but equally focused on the attitudes and habits that help young athletes succeed beyond the sport.
Competition Team, Lead CoachChristopher Herrmann
Christopher Herrmann grew up ski racing in Michigan and went on to compete collegiately at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. Over the past two decades, he has developed his craft as both a racer and coach, training and working alongside current and former US Ski Team athletes and coaches across the country. A three-time MHSAA Regional Coach of the Year and 2025 Division II Boys Ski Coach of the Year, Christopher has also had the privilege of racing, training, and learning under the mentorship of Cary Adgate.
Competition Team, CoachBen Crockett
Ben Crockett is a former FIS race winner with experience across FIS University events, NorAms, and National Championships. He has led training camps across Oregon, Montana, Colorado, Canada, and Europe, working with athletes at every stage of development. Ben emphasizes strong fundamentals, high-quality training environments, and long-term growth, building programs that keep athletes engaged, foster ownership, and cultivate a lasting connection to the sport. He led Petoskey High School to four Championship seasons and holds graduate degrees in Sport and Exercise Science.
Junior Team, CoachDerek Shankland
Derek brings five seasons of coaching experience with Boyne Mountain's youth racers, and his enthusiasm for the sport is genuinely contagious. His focus is on strong fundamentals and long-term athletic development, planting the seed early, nurturing a love of skiing, and letting that passion grow. For Derek, building a lifelong connection to the sport is the goal; ski racing is simply the vehicle that makes better skiers and more confident athletes along the way.
Competition Team & CR3, CoachRob Reader
Rob Reader brings more than 13 years of high school coaching experience, five seasons with Team Boyne, and over 20 years of masters racing to his work with athletes. A USSS Level 200–certified coach, Rob's approach extends well beyond performance — he builds trust, strong relationships, and a supportive environment where athletes can develop resilience, character, and real-life skills. For Rob, success isn't measured only by results, but by the confident, well-rounded individuals his athletes become.
Masters Team, Head CoachGary Konsza
Gary Konsza is a USSS Level 200 race coach, PSIA ski instructor, and master's racer who won the Master's National Championships in 1998. Having learned to ski as an adult, he brings a distinctive perspective to teaching — one grounded in empathy for the learning process at every age and ability level. Gary has coached at Boyne Mountain since 2009, and his philosophy is straightforward: make it fun. When athletes are enjoying themselves, he believes, learning follows naturally.
Team Boyne, CoachConnor Abraham
Connor Abraham is a Team Boyne alumnus and USSS Level 100 coach who has been with the program since 2022. A four-time All-State skier and 2022 MHSAA Slalom State Champion, he went on to captain the men's ski team at Northern Michigan University, earning three Scholar All-American honors across four regional championships and three national championship appearances. Connor's coaching focuses on meaningful training that develops both physical and mental performance, and as an accomplished technician himself, he leads by example on the hill.
Team Boyne, CoachReagan OIli
Reagan Olli is a program alumnus and one of the greatest success stories in Team Boyne history. A two-time high school state champion and six-time FIS race winner, she went on to lead NMU's ski team both on the hill and in the classroom — capping a decorated collegiate career with a USCSA individual national title. Reagan holds a master's degree in Exercise Science and now brings that same drive and expertise to her work coaching the next generation of Team Boyne athletes.
Team Boyne, CoachJeff McKenna
With 20 years of race program management experience, Jeff McKenna brings deep expertise in every aspect of alpine ski racing infrastructure, from timing systems and software to facility design and competition management. A PSIA-certified instructor with extensive junior race program experience, he pairs that hands-on knowledge with 40 years of IT engineering precision. Jeff's approach is built on proactive planning and attention to detail.
