Make A Yarnstorm on SkyBridge Michigan

Calling all creatives

We have dreams of psychedelically colorful hand-knit panels adorning the 1200' foot walkway of SkyBridge Michigan. Yarn enthusiasts from Maine to Wisconsin and places throughout Michigan signed up to create these masterpieces. We'll drape the bridge in their art this June!

Fiber Freaks Unite

From first-time knitters to crochet masters, you all are making magic. Fiber-tastic panels representing the vibrant, playful colors of Michigan summers are going to hang end-to-end on SkyBridge Michigan. Grab those needles, and let's knit!

Knit Deadline is May 1

Each artist who enters a handcrafted textile is invited to view the sky-high yarn display on Saturday, June 8 with an artist meet-and-greet that includes a mimosa brunch before walking SkyBridge Michigan for a "first look" at a fully yarn-bombed bridge. Artists that create half panels receive (1) complimentary SkyBridge Michigan ticket, full panel creators receive (2) SkyBridge Michigan tickets valid anytime during the summer season.

Not a Fan of Heights?

Take a stroll on the SkyBridge Loop to take in the breathtaking views and colorful bridge.

Knit to Win

All registered artists are entered for a chance to win a two-night stay in Chalet Edelweiss with massages from The Spa at Boyne Mountain for two valued at $1,500. Winner drawn at random on June 8.

        Event Details

        • To understand International Yarn Bombing Day, we first need to take a look at what yarn bombing is. It is sometimes referred to as guerrilla knitting or yarnstorming. No matter what you call it, it is simply the practice of knitted works of art being added to public places. For example, a yarn bomber may design some sort of colorful knitted pattern and wrap it around a bus stop. This practice aimed to try and take knitting from something viewed as merely for creating clothes and hats to something that could add meaning and color to urban locations.

It’s not like standard graffiti where the point is to mark your territory. It’s also definitely not an act of vandalizing. It is about creating a sense of belonging and conveying meaning. International Yarn Bombing Day, therefore, is simply a celebration of this tradition, raising awareness of the art of crochet and knitting while having a lot of fun in the process.

        • We are thrilled to announce the kick-off to the Strings in Sky summer series with Knit the Bridge.
